Grass-Fed—According to the United States Department of Agriculture, this means that the cattle ate only grass and forages (leafy plants), never grain or grain by-products, and had continuous access to pasture during the growing season. Grass-fed cattle may or may not be organic.
How we raise our cattle:
We’re often asked how we raise our grass fed beef. Our customers are interested in knowing if we buy our cattle, or if they are born and raised on the farm.
Our cattle are born and raised on our farm. That’s how we can tell you with certainty what they’ve eaten their entire lives and we know they’ve been treated with the utmost respect and love.
That’s the short answer.
We’re a cow-calf farm. All the calves born on this farm stay here with their mamas and siblings for their entire lives. Heifers we keep to increase the herd and the steers are sold for consumption. This process is very important to us here at the farm. We want them to live their lives in the most natural way possible.
We feel that using a bull naturally suits the cow better and it allows them to breed in their natural environment. Our bulls are rotated every other year to avoid any incestuous mating.
From late spring until late fall our animals are on pasture and rotational grazing system eating a mixture of clover, alfalfa, and other chosen grasses. They are only fed grass from start to finish and are never given any grain.
Rotational grazing can help improve productivity, weight gain or milk production per acre, and overall net return to the farm. Rotational grazing allows for better manure distribution that acts as a source of nutrients to the soil.
In the winter our herd is kept on a chosen pasture for them to "winter" in and are fed large round bales of the grasses we bale all summer. They are also given a precise mixture of vitamins and minerals to ensure they are getting all the nutrients needed to maintain a healthy and happy life.
